Chara gets a bad rap. Mention their name, and most players think: creepy red eyes, genocide route, evil incarnate. But what if Chara isn’t the villain of Undertale, what if they’re just a reflection of you?

Chara wakes up when you name them at the start. They’re the first fallen human, sure, but they’re also the narrator. Every “You equipped the bandage” or “You felt like you were going to have a bad time” might be Chara’s voice. That means they’re there, watching, and reacting, to every decision you make.
In the Genocide Route, they don’t force you to kill. You choose that. And by the end, they simply become what you made them into. The final speech, often cited as proof of Chara’s evil, is arguably just brutal honesty: “You and I are no different.”
Maybe Chara isn’t the one turning evil. Maybe they’re a blank slate, shaped by the player’s intent—just like the world of Undertale itself.
The real question isn’t, “Is Chara evil?”
It’s: What did you do to them?
