Kris, the Puppet Hero: Who's Really in Control?

From the moment you start Deltarune, one thing becomes clear: Kris is not like other RPG protagonists. You don’t create them, you possess them. The game explicitly tells you this in its chilling opening sequence, and then proves it when Kris rips out their soul, your connection to them, and acts on their own.

So… who is Kris without us?

In a world that constantly references choices that don’t matter, Kris stands out as someone trapped in their own story. We, the player, take over their body and steer their actions, but Kris’s eerie midnight behavior, like dragging a knife and creating Dark Fountains, suggests their own will is alive and well beneath the surface.

Some fans theorize Kris is resisting our control, deliberately misleading us or sabotaging our goals. Others see them as trying to fix something broken, perhaps even protect the world from us. After all, we’re the ones who push every reset, every conflict, every escalation.

Deltarune flips the chosen-one trope upside down. Kris isn't a hero on a quest, they're a puppet trying to cut their strings.
