Gaster’s Broken World: A Theory on the Void and Alternate Timelines

You never meet W.D. Gaster in Undertale, at least, not directly. But his shadow stretches across the game like a crack in the code. He's the former Royal Scientist, scattered across time and space after an experiment went wrong. Or so the whispers say.

Players have found strange “Gaster followers,” hidden NPCs who speak in glitchy dialogue and warn of voids, fragments, and broken timelines. His name appears only in corrupted files, and some game versions can't even access his content at all.

What if Gaster isn’t dead… just disconnected?

One theory suggests Gaster exists in a space between timelines, a void beyond player resets, where he watches the multiverse spin out of control. Maybe he's trying to fix it. Maybe he's behind the mechanics of SAVE and LOAD. Or maybe he’s simply a warning: that meddling with time, even in a game, always has consequences.

In Deltarune, references to Gaster are stronger, even canonized. Some fans believe he helped build the world, or is trying to escape from it.

If so, we’re not just playing a game anymore. We’re part of someone else's broken experiment.
